KIM TONG

ABOUT

Kim Tong’s interest in the art of the 'Sublime’ has been centre stage throughout her career. Her Art Practice  continues to investigate Sublime encounter with the abyss, the void, the unexpected. Kim's practice consists of  etchings, digital prints, figurative drawings and sumptuous layered glazed oil paintings that combine gestural,  symbolic and abstract elements.

Whilst at Goldsmiths she completed her PhD The Sur(real) Sublime (1997) which played with conventional structures of  text, word and image with reference to the work of Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Helen Chadwick, Alison Wilding and contemporary British art of the 1990s. This research informed her lecture course at Goldsmiths titled 'Seduction and Romance in the Visual Field'.

Kim has  exhibited  work in many solo and group exhibitions including Reclaiming The Madonna (1994) an Eastern Arts Council Touring Exhibition that included Sarah Raphael, Eileen Cooper, and Paula Rego. She was also part of the International Drawing Exhibition, Lines of Desire, A North West Arts Board touring exhibition which also included artists Paula Rego and Rita Donagh. Drawing is still central to her studio practice and she is a member of the Thames Barrier Print Studio in London.

Shortly after leaving Art School Kim founded  Tart Art , an art collective that exhibited widely and performed  live drawing and painting performances and murals across London. She was active in the early days of the London women's art movement, exhibiting work and writing for the first three Brixton Women’s Art Collective exhibitions. During this period, Kim published essays in the Women Artist Slide Library Journal, Everywomen, Make, and Spare Rib.
